What is Mirena?

Mirena is a an effective, long term and reversible method of contraception. It consists of a small,soft,flexible plastic T shaped frame which is inserted into the womb.This carries the hormone in a sleeve around the stem,and has two fine threads attached to the base to help with removal.

The continuously released hormone (a progesterone) is identical to one of the hormones found in contraceptive pills. Mirena does not contain any oestrogen.

It is reliable and reversible. It can also be used for women who have heavy painful periods, and also for protecting the lining of the uterus, for women who are receiving short term oestrogen therapy for the management of menopause symptoms.

Mirena is effective and reliable for up to five years.
